This session, provided by Doug Hazelman and Anton Gostev is all about the new Veeam Backup & Replication v7, launched not even 2 weeks ago.
Veeam v7 Deep Dive
I have published an article right after the launch about upgrading your existing Veeam installation and the new features I could find in the first few minutes. Check it out in the related articles section at the bottom of this page.
During this session I learned some new things and added some actions to my to-do which I will perform when I get back from VMworld. I will share these items with you, hopefully helping you to improve your environment with Veeam B&R v7 as well.
By default the following three features, which will make your backup jobs run alot faster, are not enabled if you upgrade your existing installation:
- Parallel processing
- Hardware accelerated compression
- Backup from storage snapshots

Especially the storage snapshots caught my attention. My attention got confirmed by the fact that Veeam is supporting storage systems from HP, which is mainly run in the environments I manage. Enabling storage snapshots will change the way a VM is being backed up.
Snapshotting the VM state using vSphere technology is still being performed, but instead of backing up the files in the datastore, Veeam will create a snapshot on your storage system and will remove the vSphere snapshot at the same time, removing the impact of committing changes while the snapshot was active. The backup will run using the storage snapshot, which is way faster and like I said will actually prevent impact on your VM which could be a problem with for example Microsoft Exchange or high transactional databases.

- How does storage snapshotting work?
Veeam advises to use the ‘3-2-1 rule’, which actually means having 3 copies of your backups, where 2 are remote and 1 is on tape. Also, Veeam stated that using fast storage for short-term backup is a good idea, seen the fact that SureBackup and Instant VM Recovery could use a fast storage system to speed up the restore process. Older recovery points should be placed on cheaper storage.
Finishing up, I noticed that support for Microsoft Exchange 2013 is added and you can even restore to Office 365. That’s cool!

Hi Gil, thanks for your comment. I agree, the technical level should’ve gone literally ‘deeper’ to really be a deep dive. I actually went for this session to learn more about the features provided by Veeam B&R v7 and that’s what I got =) Hopefully Veeam will come up with an advanced technical session some day.
